ArmInfo. The issue of air pollution in Yerevan must be addressed at the legislative level, as stated by NA Speaker Alen Simonyan during an extraordinary session of the National Assembly on November 28.
He noted that a sharp deterioration in the environment has been observed recently. Yerevan, located in a basin, has found itself in a challenging situation due to climate changes.
The Speaker mentioned RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's decision to create a working group to study the issue. "We need to decide: either we continue to breath harmful pollutants and lose our loved ones to various diseases, including cancer, or we find a way out of this situation; this cannot continue any longer," Alen Simonyan said. He pointed out that legislative initiatives will be introduced in the very near future imposing strict penalties on older vehicles, emitting harmful exhaust fumes. Severe penalties will also be imposed on construction companies that violate environmental regulations. The Speaker emphasized the importance of stringent legislative measures to address these issues effectively.
