ArmInfo. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova ironically compared the Armenian authorities, who are seeking to join the European Union while remaining a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, to a passenger who wants to get from point "A" to point "G."
"Imagine an airport, a waiting area, a transfer, a connecting flight. Several passengers who have gone through all sorts of security checks, border control, security, and so on. Each one, literally every one of them, is conscientious, with specific goals and objectives. And then, when boarding is announced, suddenly one of the passengers, supposedly booked for this flight, says, 'You know, I'm not going to Point BTB, I'm going to Point G,'" Zakharova said on Sputnik Radio.
Speaking about Armenia's aspirations to join the EU while remaining in the EAEU, Zakharova noted that this "is no longer even an attempt to sit on two chairs."
"It's abnormal when manipulation occurs. When good intentions and the rule of law, which ensure the normal functioning of a certain sphere, are used for nefarious purposes. That's abnormal. If you want to get to point C via point B, that's also possible. It's called transit. But it has its own logistics. When you register for point B, you fly, get off there, say goodbye to everyone, and go where you need to go. It was an open choice. But it was made. Do you want to change your choice? Go ahead. There is a civilized way to do that," she explained.
In the spring of 2025, Armenia adopted a law declaring the country's intention to join the European Union, although the union itself did not offer the country membership. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Yerevan understands the incompatibility of the republic's simultaneous membership in the EU and the EAEU, but the country will align its agenda with both associations as long as possible.
