ArmInfo. Armenia will consider choosing between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU) when the issue becomes pressing. Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan stated this in an interview with Pavel Zarubin for Vesti in Astana.
"When the issue becomes pressing, then we will have concrete details, and then we will conduct stress tests, if necessary. We are simply not considering such a scenario now," the Armenian Deputy Prime Minister said. He noted that Armenia is not currently considering leaving the EAEU.
When asked whether Armenia had calculated the potential economic damage in the event of curtailing or severing ties with the EAEU, Grigoryan stated that Armenia has no plans to sever ties with the Eurasian Economic Union.
"We are not considering severing ties with the Eurasian Economic Union. Accordingly, we see no need to make calculations at this time," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
As a reminder, on January 9, 2025, the Armenian government approved a draft law on the start of the EU accession process, proposed by the "Eurakve" civic initiative. The draft law was submitted to the Armenian parliament for approval. On March 26, the parliament adopted it in its final reading and sent it to the president for signature. The document was signed on April 4 of that year. Moscow stated that Russia had conveyed to Armenia that simultaneous membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union was impossible. On May 9, 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking to journalists, suggested that Armenia decide on its membership in the EU and the EAEU as soon as possible, expressing its readiness to "begin a civilized divorce" if necessary. Yerevan responded by stating that it would leave the EAEU whenever it deemed it necessary. And on May 29, the leaders of the EAEU countries adopted a joint statement demanding that Armenia hold a referendum on its membership in the EAEU.
