ArmInfo. Arayik Harutyunyan, Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Armenia, is not as pessimistic as the Prime Minister about holding a referendum and adopting a new Constitution. He made this statement at a briefing with journalists at the office of the ruling "Civil Contract" party on March 27.
The previous day, Prime Minister Pashinyan announced at a government briefing that a referendum on constitutional amendments would be held as many times as necessary to fully approve the new Constitution. He noted that the ruling party is prepared to conduct public outreach if the referendum fails. "We will go to our people, convince them, explain, and hold another referendum. I don't see any problems here," Pashinyan said. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that an honest dialogue with citizens would lead to understanding. "Because we represent our people. We are not representatives of an empire, so that what we say would be incomprehensible to the people," he emphasized. Earlier, Pashinyan also complained that it seemed as if the new text of the Constitution would only be adopted by the government and the National Assembly. "We can only approve the draft, but whether it becomes the Constitution will be decided by the people," the Prime Minister said.
Meanwhile, Arayik Harutyunyan is confident that the Prime Minister and his political team will be able to communicate to the public during the campaign, explain it, and reach a unified position on the importance of the referendum and its adoption.
"I think we should stick to Plan A, and there will be no problems. In my opinion, these processes, this pre- election phase, and our contacts with citizens show that Plan B is feasible. And, in all likelihood, we will go follow this option," the Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister of Armenia stated.
