ArmInfo. A rally by the Our Way movement in support of renowned businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan has begun in Freedom Square.
Representatives of the movement noted that today's rally will change many things, as those gathered are determined and united in their intention to fight the lawlessness currently unfolding in our country. They believe a change of government is the only way out of the current situation. "The Our Way movement is taking on this responsibility to lead the country out of this difficult situation and achieve justice. Because what is happening in our country defies logic-legally, politically, and humanly speaking," they noted.
When asked whether Armenia's political forces are prepared to take on the blow the authorities are currently inflicting on the Armenian Apostolic Church, it was noted that Samvel Karapetyan and the Ourc Way movement have stated their readiness from the very beginning. "Everyone knows that the protection of the Armenian Apostolic Church and national values is a priority in our ideology and actions," noted the Movement's representatives.
As previously announced, a march to the National Security Service building, where Samvel Karapetyan is being held, will follow the rally in Freedom Square.
As a reminder, Samvel Karapetyan was detained in Yerevan on the night of June 18 by Armenian law enforcement agencies after expressing support for the Armenian Apostolic Church. This was followed by open threats from the Prime Minister. On the night of June 19, the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction remanded Samvel Karapetyan in custody for two months. He is being held in the Yerevan-Kentron Penitentiary (the notorious "KGB basement" in the National Security Service building). He is accused of publicly calling for a takeover of power in the country. Karapetyan denies his guilt. Furthermore, in July, the head of the Tashir Group of Companies was charged with new money laundering. On August 15, the Anti-Corruption Court, early in the morning, after nearly 10 hours of considering the investigator's petition, extended Karapetyan's arrest for another two months.
