ArmInfo. Artsakh and Syunik are the main guarantee of Armenian sovereignty and development, and not just territories or Armenians who have lived there for thousands of years. Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan wrote about this on his Facebook page on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Artsakh. In this vein, he recalled that politics is inevitably linked to the geography of the territory and drew attention to the fact that the independence and sovereignty of Armenia over the past 100 years have been interconnected with three southeastern regions of the Armenian Highlands - Nakhichevan, Syunik and Artsakh.
"Armenia as a state, and we as a collective community, even with the most minimal resources, achieved success only when we fought to establish our sovereignty over these original Armenian territories.
Even without achieving final success, this struggle contributed to the development of all spheres of our life, from education to industry. When we stopped fighting, we immediately lost not only in these areas, but in general: degradation, losses, suffering, polarization," Geghamyan emphasized.
The struggle, as the expert assured, is the main guarantee of the country's development, and not enslavement, which the ruling Civil Contract party calls "peace." According to him, Armenia's enemies - Turkey and Azerbaijan - know and understand this, and therefore they encourage us not to fight in various ways, promising slavery.
"Today is September 2, 2025. It so happened that today the symbol of our struggle for development is again associated with Artsakh and Syunik - not just with the territory or the Armenians who have lived there for thousands of years, but Artsakh and Syunik as the main guarantee of Armenian sovereignty and development. There will be a struggle for them, we will have a new and developed economy, growing authority, quality education, a growing population. If this does not happen, we will gradually turn into a "cheap and empty hotel", and eventually - into a province of Turkey. Despite all the seeming inconveniences of the struggle, I choose the struggle to develop. That is why I will be at Freedom Square today," the Turkologist summed up.
Today, September 2, at 18:30, a large rally of unity will be held at Freedom Square on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of Artsakh's independence.
On September 2, 1991, a joint session of the Nagorno-Karabakh regional and Shahumyan district councils of people's deputies was held, at which the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) was proclaimed.
