Political scientist: Armenia faces the imperative of a new phase of  independence in the current territorial realities

ArmInfo.  Armenia faces the imperative of a new phase of independence, with the primary objective being the salvation of the Republic, at least in the current  territorial realities. This viewpoint was shared  by political  scientist Suren Surenyants  during a press conference in Yerevan  on  August 11.

In this context, he mentioned that the country is nearing the period  of parliamentary elections. Surenyants believes that autumn will be a  time of "reshuffles". "I think we should expect personnel changes,  even among the opposition. It is possible that we will also see new  alliances forming during this time," the expert clarified. Surenyants  pointed out  that it was this is when  Armenian Prime Minister Nikol  Pashinyan will actively use the agreements reached in Washington to  present himself as the one who facilitated peace opportunities, while  presenting the opposition as those who are trying to destroy them. 

"And here our task is to prevent him from confusing society with  these manipulations and not to allow Pashinyan to use the "benefits"  he received in Washington. I have already noted that this trip will  not bring any real benefit to the country, it was the Prime Minister  who needed it. We are already witnessing how the content of the  declaration signed there is changing and how it is being presented.  This once again proves that the content is not important to  Pashinyan, but the very fact of having such a "paper" that he must  use during the elections," Surenyants explained. The political  scientist also believes that the events in Washington will speed up  the processes before the parliamentary elections, and expressed his  conviction that new arrests should be expected before them.

 "Pashinyan will continue to destroy any potential sources of  confrontation. And in this context, the events in Washington will be  carte blanche for the ruling regime to implement its plans inside the  country and intensify repressions," the expert notes. He doubts that  the Armenian prime minister will go to early elections amidst this  euphoria, noting that the Washington declaration has not yet sparked  the public reaction that Pashinyan may have hoped for. "The  opposition is also preparing for parliamentary elections.  However,  here we must understand the most important thing: the most effective  thing in this case can only be its consolidation. But, for now, it is  not clear whether the opposition will be able to unite,   particularly, the second and third presidents of Armenia," Surenyants  concluded.
