ArmInfo.Armenian authorities have decided to legislatively restrict the voting rights of Armenian citizens abroad, planning to introduce a requirement that they must reside in the country for the past six months to qualify for participation in elections. This was written on his Facebook page by Mesrop Arakelyan, a member of the "Country for Life" party.
"I studied the regulations of the EU countries so beloved by the authorities. In 25 of the 27 EU countries, citizens abroad also have the right to vote in elections, casting their ballots from their country of residence. Citizens of all other EAEU countries also have the right to vote from abroad. Incidentally, in Armenia, until 2003, Armenian citizens abroad also voted in elections, but this opportunity was abolished by the former authorities, whom the authorities so favor. And it's not hard to guess why," Arakelyan wrote.
It is noteworthy that the entire pre-election period for the parliamentary elections in Armenia was accompanied by claims by the Armenian authorities that Russia had allegedly sent approximately 100,000 Russian Armenians to their homeland to participate in the electoral process and support opposition candidates. No real evidence was presented to support this claim. Moreover, media polls indicated that the majority of Russian Armenians in Armenia during this period cast their votes for Nikol Pashinyan's ruling party.
