High-Level Regional Meeting Dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Held in Ashgabat

ArmInfo.On 8 June 2026, a high-level regional meeting dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. About this reports MFA of Turkmenistan. 

The event brought together Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), as well as the heads of the diplomatic missions of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic.

Opening the meeting, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan M. Bashimova emphasized that the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty has established a strong international norm against nuclear testing, strengthened confidence among states and made a significant contribution to global stability.

In her remarks, M. Bashimova noted that Turkmenistan consistently supports international efforts aimed at strengthening global security, peace and trust, and advocates for the further advancement of initiatives in the field of disarmament and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

For his part, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Dr. Robert Floyd expressed appreciation to Turkmenistan for its unwavering commitment to the principles of peace, security and multilateral cooperation. He highlighted the important role of the Central Asian states in advancing the international agenda on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, stressing that the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty remains one of the most significant achievements of the international community on the path toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

The participants underscored the historical significance of the CTBT and its important role in strengthening international peace and security. It was noted that over the past three decades the Treaty has become a key element of the international arms control architecture and has contributed to strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

In this context, Dr. R. Floyd highlighted the importance of the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia.

The meeting included an exchange of views on further promoting the goals and principles of the CTBT, strengthening regional and international cooperation in the field of disarmament, and raising international awareness of the importance of the Treaty's early entry into force.

The parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation in the interests of ensuring sustainable peace, security and stability at both the regional and global levels.
