ArmInfo. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan intends to continue leveraging the benefits of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)—profiting from Russia and other member states—until Armenia is invited to join the European Union. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, stated this on X. The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council compared Pashinyan's reaction to calls for a referendum on Armenia's membership in either the EAEU or the EU to Leon Trotsky's famous formula: "Neither war nor peace, but dismiss the army."
"Essentially, it amounts to this: we will not decide anything via a referendum until we are invited into the EU. And then, naturally, we will run off to Europe in a heartbeat. But until then, we will enjoy all the benefits of the EAEU, skillfully profiting from Russia and other union countries. Very clever, indeed," Medvedev wrote.
Earlier today, Pashinyan noted that until a choice between the EU and the EAEU becomes unavoidable, Armenia will remain in the latter. He acknowledged that the final decision must be made by the people, but deemed holding a referendum illogical before Yerevan has formally applied to the EU.
At the end of May, after the EAEU summit in Astana, member states Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan urged Armenia to organize a referendum at the earliest opportunity on its choice between the EAEU and the EU.
