ArmInfo. The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) is actively working to bring liturgical life back to the historic Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Amrakits, Lori Region, as announced by Archpriest Arseny, Secretary of the Yerevan-Armenian Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, at a press conference on May 15.
The church was built in the 1840s and is considered one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Armenia. Between 1910 and 1914, it was restored and acquired its current appearance. Services were held there until the devastating earthquake of 1988. For nearly 40 years, the church remained abandoned. At the initiative of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia, the shrine was restored. Restoration work was completed in March of this year.
Archpriest Arseny expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia for deeming the restoration of this historical monument necessary and possible. He noted that he had overseen the work, and today the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is in excellent condition. Specifically, according to Father Arseny, work was carried out to strengthen the foundation, vaults, and other structures. "Worship services have not yet resumed, but we are in discussions with the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports about the possibility of transferring the church to the Russian Orthodox Church or some form of shared use," he noted.
